HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?
The removal or permanent reduction of unwanted hair by laser light depends on the scientific principle of selective photothermolysis. When the correct wavelength of laser light is applied to hair in the treatment area, melanin in the hair absorbs the light, which is converted into heat energy. Buildup of thermal energy causes the destruction of hair follicles as well as associated stem cells and dermal papillae, while the surrounding skin is undamaged. Some follicles will only be damaged or may regrow, so numerous treatments are required to reduce or eliminate unwanted hair effectively for a persistent result.
To successfully remove unwanted hair by laser treatment, the clinician must carefully apply energy so that hair follicles are damaged but nearby skin and tissues are spared. This can be more or less difficult depending on each patient’s individual characteristics such as skin color, hair color, and hair thickness. When treating hair with a laser, the clinician can account for these characteristics by adjusting treatment parameters such as fluence, pulse width, and repetition rate. Many in-effective devices are limited in their utility because the different parameters cannot be adjusted independently (if at all). Understandably, treatment of darker skin is more challenging due to the higher concentration of melanin in the skin as a competing chromophore; in those cases treatment may be too painful or cause unwanted side effects. However, at Cosmedix we use the latest technology and adopt the know how from experienced specialists in the field to make sure you can rely on excellent results every time. |

RESULTS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What type of laser does Cosmedix Clinics have?
Cosmedix Clinics uses three specific laser systems that are medically graded for superior results of permanent hair removal on a range of skin and hair types. We use professional Medical Grade Lasers that are approved by the TGA of Australia, which include Cosjet-SR 1064nm Long Pulse and Depilight PLUS 808nm Diode Laser.
Are laser treatments safe?
Specific lasers target only certain structures in skin but no laser system utilised at Cosmedix produce UV light so there are no risks to the skin. However, we do advise the use of sun screen to increase the skin's UV protect from the sun especially after laser treatments.
We also perform a thorough skin analysis and skin safety check prior to every laser treatment so you can be assured each laser session you receive will be safe and effective. You may also be pleased to know we have both male and female qualified laser technicians with years of experience. You can be at ease knowing that you are getting the best professional service for laser treatments.
How many sessions will I need?
This will depend on the area being treated. Generally, most patients will require 6-9 sessions with maintenance treatments. During your first visit, the area will be assessed and a tailored treatment plan will be provided.
How often should I have a treatment?
It is recommended that the treatments are spaced 6-12 weeks apart. Following and adhering to the clinicians treatment plan will provide the best results for long term and permanent effects.
How long should I NOT shave, tweeze/pluck, bleach, wax?
Generally hair should be shaved within 24 hours before the treatment. Female facial hair does not need to be shaved and in most cases the laser treatment can be carried on without trimming but in some cases, trimming the hair may be more suitable for superior results. If you have waxed, bleached or plucked, the hair should be left to regrow for approx 3-4 weeks prior to the treatments but still requires to be shaven (again, except for female facial hair)
Can laser hair removal be done on tanned skin?
No, the client's tan must be faded. For best results, the client needs to be at their lightest skin colour.
Can Laser Hair Removal work for blonde, red, grey, or white hair?
No, the laser's energy is absorbed by colour, so if there isn't any colour in the hair, the treatment will not be effective. But our Spectra eLight system can effectively target light coloured hairs through the combination of electro-excited energy with intense pulse light energy. This technique is based on the Elós Technology.
What are the side effects/risks of laser hair removal?
Changes in pigmentation, scarring, scabbing and blistering can occur and must be advised but the incidence of this actually happening is very rare. If in the . At most, tanning increases the chance of pigmentation changes and can take months to go away or a substitute treatment can be offered.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Some areas are more sensitive than others. The feeling is similar to a rubber band snapping. A prescriptive numbing cream is available, but most people do not need it. At Cosmedix, all three laser systems adopt a Sapphire Crystal Cooling tip, which reduces any associated heating. However, the clinic can implement the latest in cryo-cooling and cold air therapy to further decrease discomfort.
What should I do before coming in for laser hair removal?
Have hair shaved so that at least a 1mm stubble is visible. Depending on how quick your hair grows back, do not shave within 24 prior to the treatment. For the face, shaving can be done immediately before treatment but for those who do not wish to shave facial hair, we recommend using a depilatory cream to break off the hairs before coming into the clinic. Charges apply for in-clinic shaving/trimming.
