REMOVE UNWANTED INK SAFELY AND AFFORDABLY
Laser is the treatment of choice for tattoo removal as it has the ability to remove the tattoo pigment completely without leaving any scarring. Our clinic offers treatment with the Q10 Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser System which can remove tattoos containing black, dark/light blue, brown, purple, red and green pigments. Yellow and white inks respond less however, subsequent treatments can usually provide adequate results. During the consultation we will advise on the approach that will be taken.
The Q10 Nd:YAG laser system is a medical grade device that is designed to produce specific wavelengths of light. The chosen wavelength is absorbed by the target object, in this case, the tattoo pigment. The Q-Switched laser pulses at fraction of a second, which allows the beam of laser to efficiently pass through skin with minimum transferred heat but effectively absorbing into ink.

The rapid absorption of light energy causes the destruction of tattoo ink which is then broken down into finer fragments and removed by the body's natural filtering mechanisms.
Ultimately, the laser tattoo removal procedure occurs in two stages.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
+ Is Tattoo Removal painful ?
The Q-Switched, Nd:YAG laser emits light in very short flashes of light called pulses. The impact of the energy from the powerful pulse of light is similar to the snap of a thin rubber band with some associated heat. A large majority of patients do not require anaesthesia, however if treatments are not tolerated, we can offer a pharmaceutical grade topical numbing agent. Nonetheless, we provide cryo-cooling before during and after the laser treatment to both protect the skin and ease any pain that may be felt. Please note, we no longer advise the use of anaesthetics injections as this can reduce the effectiveness of the tattoo removal treatment. In all cases, you may return to work and normal activity immediately as there is no down time for this procedure.
+ Is the tattoo removal procedure just one treatment ?
On average, professional tattoos require 6-15 laser sessions or more, while some amateur tattoos require 3-6 treatments, spaced approximately 4-8 weeks apart depending on the region of the body being treated. The number of treatments depends on the amount and type of ink used and the depth of the ink in the skin. Rarely, even more than ten treatments may be needed.
+ Am I a candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal ?
If you are in good health (no serious health concerns), have realistic expectations and not tanned you may be a good candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal. Nonetheless, a complete skin analysis is reviewed during the initial consultation visit. To make an enquiry or for consultation times please contact us or book now through our instant online booking system
+ Do you offer cosmetic ink laser tattoo removal on the face ?
Yes, however a pre-treatment test is required during the consultation.
+ Do you offer tattoo removal after radiotherapy (radiation tattoos) from breast cancer treatments ?
Yes, this service is free as we support all cancer patients during their recovery and wish to assist patients back to their normal daily routine. However, please check with your Oncologist/ Family Doctor first before you take this decision.
+ Do all colours of ink disappear equally as well ?
No. Dark inks (black/ blue/ brown) and red inks fade the best. Orange and yellow usually respond well. Green, light blue and purple inks are the most difficult to remove, although at Cosmedix we use the Q10 laser system which allows for coloured ink removal. Cosmetic inks usually have 100% success rates but a pre-treatment test is required as some cosmetic inks can darken due to their particular ink formulation, if this does occur, many more laser treatments will be required.
+ What can I expect after tattoo removal ?
After the procedure, the area may be red or swollen, as if mildly sunburned, for five days to several weeks. There may be some bruising and/or blistering on the days following the treatment. Pinpoint bleeding can also occur and is usually associated with certain types of colours, increased ink density and/or certain skin types but this is superficial and heals well. An antibacterial ointment and a sterile dressing will be applied to the area. The treated area should be kept clean with continued application of any ointment given to you by the clinician. A shower can be taken but you must keep the area treated clean and dry for 5-7 seven days and should not be scrubbed while in the healing stages. Recovery times depend on the extent of the treatment and the individual's capacity to heal. Redness and sensitivity may continue for several weeks, and there may be discolouration and a change in skin texture in the area, which will gradually improve.
You may not notice significant results until several treatments have been completed, so be patient. Almost all people are satisfied with the tattoo removal procedure with laser treatment. However, it is important to remember, that your skin may not look as it did before you had the tattoo, even though the tattooed pigment has been removed. Nonetheless, we do offer free skin revision treatments to all client who have initiated their treatment with us to correct any textural changes that may have occurred.
+ Will tattoo removal cause my skin to scar ?
Scarring did occur with older types of laser equipment, whereby these lasers typically caused too much heat in skin and often burned the patient. However, with the Q10 Q-switched technology, the laser is only pulsed on the skin for a few nano-seconds (billionths of a second). This does not generate the heat that causes skin damage or burns but effective enough to shatter ink into finer particles to start the fading process. In some cases, if skin is broken during the healing stages from bursting a blister or if scabbing has been forced off the skin, then the chances of textural changes to skin may be increased. In the rare incidences scarring or minor textural changes do occur, we provide free skin resurfacing treatment so the skin is near to normal tone and appearance.
+ What should I do after each tattoo removal treatment ?
You should avoid exposing the treated area to the sun, as this may retard healing and increases chances of hyper-pigmentation. Applying sun-screen is imperative regardless if you are only exposing the area to sunlight for a short while. Drinking plenty of filtered water is also a good healing and flushing aid. Lastly, following the directions of the clinician with any aftercare instructions will ensure you maintain healthy skin and a speedily recovery throughout the whole process.
